2023 Legislative Priorities

Backyard chickens/ frontyard gardens.

Food security is an increasingly important issue in a rapidly changing world.  Our food supply chain broke down repeatedly in 2020 and 2021; COVID shut down meat processing facilities, panicked consumers stripped grocery store shelves bare, trucks could not get to stores during the Great Freeze of 2021, and a software hack shut down a meat processing giant later that year.

Diversification can be achieved as easily as allowing people to use their own property to garden or raise a few laying hens for eggs.  Unfortunately, many HOAs and some cities still prohibit these activities based on outdated and stereotypical attitudes about “agricultural activity”.  We believe that every person has a right to raise food for their family on the land they own.

Expanding food freedom in Texas

The passage of the first cottage food law in 2011 and its subsequent expansions has been a triumph for entrepreneurship. However, as laws across the country continue to evolve, there is more work to be done, such as allowing home food producers to sell their labeled foods in stores, and allowing sales of refrigerated baked goods like cheesecakes or pumpkin pie.  We’ve been leading this fight since the beginning, and we’re ready to fight again to expand food freedom!
