Across Texas, we are seeing a growing trend of cities shutting down small front yard and porch sales, often without any clear explanation of why these activities are a problem. These are not large scale businesses. They are neighbors selling to neighbors. They are low impact, community driven, and often the first step for someone trying to build a small business.
Austin is now considering a proposal that takes a different approach by recognizing the value of small, neighborhood based commerce. This is an important moment, not just for Austin, but for cottage food producers and home based entrepreneurs across the state.
Below is a letter I submitted to the Austin City Council in support of this proposal and the right of Texans to not only produce food at home, but to sell it there as well.
